Traffic Calming
Traffic calming has been used in many North American communities with some having literally hundreds of locations installed. This policy and procedure will form the basis for all traffic calming discussion in the City of Sault Ste Marie.
Traffic calming should be considered during the planning stages of all private development, capital construction and capital reconstruction. Traffic calming is not limited to speed humps, it may include but is not limited to chicanes, curb extensions, directional closures, full closure, on-street parking, raised crosswalk, raised intersection, raised median island, right-in right-out island, sidewalk extension, speed hump, textured crosswalk, diverters/barriers and roundabouts.

Traffic Calming - The combination of mainly physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behaviour and improve conditions for non-motorized street users (as defined by the Institute of Transportation Engineers).

Traffic Management - Attempts to control the volume of traffic movements through the use of regulatory devices and signs such as turn prohibitions or one-way streets or other physical devices such as diverters or full road closures (as defined by the Institute of Transportation Engineers).
