Tropical storm Harvey highlights importance of preparedness

Tuesday, August 29, 2017

The current heavy rain and flooding along the Texas Gulf Coast from Tropical Storm Harvey is a poignant reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness.

Although hurricanes and tropical storms are not a high risk for the area, Sault Ste. Marie is not immune to emergencies. Emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. Being prepared ahead of time can lessen the stress and make it easier to think clearly about what to do.

The Emergency Management Division recommends that all Saultites have an emergency survival kit with supplies that would help you and your family cope for the 72 hours immediately following an emergency. Kits should include items such as non-perishable food, water, a radio, flashlights and batteries. Living on a tight budget? Additionally, staying informed during a local emergency is crucial. Stay tuned to local news stations and websites, local radio stations and the City of Sault Ste. Marie website and social media pages for emergency information.
