City of Sault Ste. Marie by-law enhances off-road vehicle safety

Thursday, November 30, 2023

To enhance safety with the use of off-road vehicles within the City limits, By-law 2023-69 took effect May 1, 2023. With winter approaching, key provisions of the off-road vehicle by-law include:

Seasonal Restrictions: To ensure the safety of all residents, off-road vehicles are restricted from operating on City streets between December 1 and March 31, with specific exceptions in place. These exceptions allow for off-road vehicles equipped with a plow or blower and a flashing amber light to be used on City streets during this period, for the purpose of snow removal. Additionally, off-road vehicles may be operated on roads for the purpose of either unloading or loading onto a truck or trailer.

Individuals contravening this by-law may face fines of up to $50,000. The City of Sault Ste. Marie urges all residents, off-road vehicle operators, and community members to familiarize themselves with the new provisions of the by-law. Compliance is important to ensuring the safety and well-being of our City.

Snowmobile Trail Prohibition: The City and the Sault Trailblazers Club places significant emphasis on the responsible use of local Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) snowmobile trails. Off-road vehicle operators are refrained from using these trails. This measure safeguards snowmobilers and maintains the integrity of designated snowmobile routes.
